In recent weeks, the have been increasing calls for large protests, particularly from the country’s Shia community for democratic reform. Reports are coming in that police in Saudi Arabia opened fire on a crowd in a bid to repress any planned protests. Being Bengali myself, like Ghosh, I have the need to understand the history of my heritage in the context of the broader religious, geographical and political changes which resulted from partition and Independence of India in 1948 and I really commend Ghosh for hitting the nail on the head.Ĭertainly a long time coming and possibly the next in line for Arab revolution. This is an epic which I’ve always wanted to read and write. We get a sense of the personal – the struggles with births, deaths, love and war – while understanding the broader changes of culture, history and geography going on in the region. Ghosh manages to successfully craft well-rounded meaningful characters into the backdrop of their homelands during a period of massive political and historical upheaval. The characters, places and times are so well defined, so fluid that you can read the story from beginning to end with ease. Not only is the novel written brilliantly, with meticulous accuracy and a real depth of character, but the most noteworthy quality of this book is that you never feel overwhelmed with the barrage of information often define many ambitious tales of this kind. Once you’ve finished The Glass Palace, you get the feeling that you’ve travelled a 100 years through the history of the South Asian subcontinent. Many more fascinating stories unfold in the pages of The Glass Palace, from the climax of the Second World War to the British collapse in Singapore and independence in India. Verdict: Batmanglij, alongside great acting performances from Skarsgård, Page and Marling, succeeds in telling a parable which is neither cheesy nor clichéd but rather brilliant at times (the pharma stunt is genius). As she delves deeper, Sarah finds herself stuck in a no man’s land between sharing the group’s ideal and opposing their extreme methods.
